SpicyRV Goes On The Air

Exhausted from a long night of pointing and laughing at terrible karaoke singers at the Sandia Casino, the SpicyRV crew headed over to Albuquerque’s biggest rock station, KZRR 94Rock, and visited their hilarious shock jock deejay, TJ Trout.

The National Fiery Foods & Barbecue Show is a huge event in Albuquerque, and TJ Trout interviewed several industry folks, including Apple Canyon Gourmet, Cervantes New Mexican Restaurant, Chef Ethan Diness, and even Dave DeWitt; AKA “The Pope of Peppers”, the guy behind the Fiery Foods Show.

When I got into the studio around 8:15AM, I noticed that there were tequila bottles and salsa everywhere. For this reason,  I immediately took a liking to these guys. As soon as they found out James Wreck was into eating extremely hot things, they challenged him to drink some Apple Canyon scotch bonnet sauce. For those not familiar with the scotch bonnet pepper, it’s in the same species as the habanero, and for those not familiar with the habanero pepper, it will light you up like a really hot metaphor. (I’m lazy.)

Once Trout realized James was going to do it, he directed his intern, who he referred to as “BOY!”, to drink a bottle of red chile hot sauce. They both guzzled their respective sauces while we shouted “Chug!”, just like we used to do back in the day at the keg parties I would throw in junior high.

I’ve never been on the radio, and I wasn’t sure if I wanted to. My original plan was just to scream “Guns and Tacos Dot Com!” into the microphone and run away, but I didn’t want to scare the Clear Channel receptionist by running through the hallway while wearing a luchador mask.  Additionally, I was a bit worried about upsetting the sports guy, who goes by “Swami Rob” and has a voice that sounds like John Fogerty after a night of bourbon and Black & Milds.

Since Boy the Intern kept hitting me in the head with the door on his way in, and he did not offer me any Blue Bell like he did everyone else, I decided to hang around in the back corner of the room. This way I could have a better perspective of the hot news/traffic/weather lady as she reported with clarity and precision. I repeatedly tried to catch her eye so I could wink or make suggestive faces, but I couldn’t get her to look at me. I removed the luchador mask, still no luck.

We discussed our luchador adventure in El Paso with TJ Trout, and he and James enjoyed watching the awesome video of me getting beat to a pulp by a 5’5, 140 lb man that was dressed like some kind of  bird. Meanwhile everyone in the studio pointed at me and laughed uncontrollably, wiping tears from their faces.  It’s always good to make new friends.

If you’d like to hear the SpicyRV crew again, we’re doing the radio thing tomorrow (March 4) as well. Go to KZRR’s home page and choose the Listen Now option, and you can stream it from anywhere. We’ll get started somewhere between 8 and 9 Mountain Time tomorrow.

  1. Y’all are doing great. I see a full length motion picture in your future. Except maybe they’ll put someone with hair in place for James. Jay, where’s my BEER.
